DC United striker Wayne Rooney is adamant that former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to win the 2018 Ballon d’Or ahead of recipient Luka Modric.

The ex-England international skipper told DAZN that he would have given his vote to Ronaldo who had a phenomenal year.

Luka Modric won the award ahead of former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.

Modric and Ronaldo were in the Real Madrid team that won three successive Champions League titles under the guidance of French football legend Zinedine Zidane.

The third of those three titles was won last summer when Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-1 and both players played their part.

Luka Modric won the award mainly due to his heroics for the Croatian national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.

He starred as Croatia reached the final of the tournament in surprising fashion before they were beaten by eventual champions France via a 4-2 loss.

Luka Modric won the best player award at the tournament as Croatia posted their best result in the history of the World Cup.

Wayne Rooney plays his club football for D.C United in the MLS (Major League Soccer) at the moment after leaving Everton last year.
