Manchester United have been dealt a transfer blow with the news that midfield target Cesc Fabregas is close to joining French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in this transfer window.

Spanish international star Cesc Fabregas is on the payroll of top four rivals Chelsea and was linked with a transfer to Manchester United while Jose Mourinho was still the Red Devils manager.

Fabregas and Mourinho worked together while the latter was the Chelsea manager for a second time.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona star Fabregas was an integral part of the Chelsea team that won the 2014/15 Premier League title under the guidance of Jose Mourinho and reports claimed that he could reunite with the Portuguese tactician at Manchester United.

It seems like the three-time European champions will miss out on the signature of the player.

According to popular French news outlet L’Equipe, Cesc Fabregas is close to joining struggling French Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco and that talks are at an advanced stage.

Monaco manager Thierry Henry is keen to boost his squad with the addition of an experienced player like Fabregas whom he played with while they were in North London with Arsenal.

Fabregas succeeded Thierry Henry as the Gunners captain when he left the club for Catalan giants Barcelona in 2007.
