North London giants Arsenal have failed with a big bid for AS Roma forward Cengiz Under as club manager Unai Emery targets new players to boost his squad for the remainder of this season.
Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport via the Daily Express claim that the Gunners made a bid of around €60m (£54m) for the Turkish international star but it was swiftly rejected by the Italian capital club.
AS Roma sporting director Monchi was said to have rejected the Arsenal bid despite his close ties with Gunners boss Unai Emery.
Monchi was the Sevilla sporting director while Unai Emery was the manager of the Andalusian outfit.
He left the Spanish La Liga side for AS Roma in 2017.
Cengiz Under has been a long-term target for Arsenal dating back to the start of last year.
The Gunners have targeted the young winger as a possible replacement for injured Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck who has been ruled out for the remainder of this season.
He suffered a serious ankle injury during the Europa League clash with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in November.
His Arsenal contract expires in the summer and the North Londoners have lined up the 21-year-old as a possible replacement for former Manchester United and Sunderland star Welbeck.
