Former Champions League winners Manchester United have turned their attention to one of the best defenders in the Italian Serie A as they try to solve their defensive issues.

The Red Devils are one of the poorest teams in the English top flight this season defensively.

They have conceded 32 goals in just 20 league games and senior Manchester United officials want to sign a new centre-back to solve their defensive problems.

Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have all failed to impress for the Red Devils on the defensive front.

Italian media portal Tuttomercatoweb claim that Manchester United have made AS Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas their top defensive target ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window scheduled to begin at the start at the New Year.

Kostas Manolas has a £32.4m release clause in his contract with the Italian capital club.

He has built a reputation to be one of the best centre-backs in the Italian Serie A since his transfer from Greek Super League side Olympiacos in the summer of 2014.

Manchester United have been linked with several defenders ahead of the January transfer window.

Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Matthijs De Ligt, Diego Godin and Kalidou Koulibaly have all been linked with the Old Trafford outfit this year.
