Three-time Premier League champions Arsenal are reportedly in talks to sign highly-rated Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl ahead of the upcoming transfer window in the New Year.
According to trusted German newspaper Bild, the Gunners’ head of recruitment Sven Mslintat and some club officials have travelled to Germany for negotiations with Borussia Dortmund with the view to a move for the 23-year-old.
There are doubts over the long-term future of Weigl at Borussia Dortmund after he lost his place in the starting XI due to the summer arrivals of Axel Witsel and Thomas Delaney.
He has started just two games in the new German Bundesliga season and a total of 150 minutes in the league.
Julian Weigl has a Dortmund contract that runs until the end of the 2020/21 season.
He came close to joining Manchester City in the summer in a deal worth €68m but the move didn’t materialise.
Arsenal are on the search for midfield reinforcements due to the imminent exits of both Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed ElNeny.
The two midfielders are said to be on their way out of the Emirates Stadium and Weigl could be a possible reinforcement to cushion the blow of losing both Ramsey and ElNeny.
