Barcelona are set to hijack a deal for Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt who was reported to be on Liverpool’s radar for a while now.

It is reported that the Spanish giants are willing to break the bank for the young Ajax star.

The Reds were believed to be ahead before the Spanish giants came in the scene with manager Jurgen Klopp being a big fan and the hope of linking him up with his fellow countryman and former Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk had earlier spoken on Matthijs de Ligt with the hope that the 19-year-old will consider a switch to the Anfield.

He noted that Matthijs de Ligt is a good player who has become one of the best at a very young age but hopes he makes the right decision to move to the right place.

With the latest development, the Spanish sides are believed to have won the race for the highly rated teenage defender with a view of having him as a long-term replacement for legend defender Gerard Pique who turns 32-year-old this winter.

This, therefore, becomes a big blow for Liverpool who are also anxious to have the player as they aim to challenge Manchester City in the Premier League race.
