Premier League giants Manchester United have reportedly received a big boost in their pursuit of Barcelona defender Jordi Alba.
According to Spanish news outlet Sport via Caughtoffside, the Red Devils’ chances of signing the former Valencia left-back have been boosted by Barcelona’s inability to meet his huge financial demands.
Barcelona and his representatives have been in contract talks for some weeks, but the Spanish La Liga giants have not been able to meet the demands of the 29-year-old.
His current contract at Barcelona expires at the end of the 2019/2020 season and the Spanish champions are at the risk of losing him to another club next summer when he has just 12 months left on the deal.
The Barcelona Academy graduate underlined his importance to the Nou Camp outfit on Wednesday night against Inter Milan.
The Spanish international was on target as he helped Barcelona maintain their perfect to this season’s Champions League campaign via a 2-0 win over their Italian opponents.
Alba doubled his side’s lead in the second half after Rafinha Alcantara had given Barcelona a first half lead.
Manchester United have been touted as a possible destination for him if he exits Barcelona but the Red Devils might be forced to pay his €150m (£133m) release clause in full.
