German playmaker Mesut Ozil is the most popular player in the Arsenal squad after topping shirt sales.
Shirt sales represent a yardstick with which one can measure players’ popularity amongst fans.
Mesut Ozil changed his number from 11 to 10 in the summer following the departure of Arsenal Academy graduate Jack Wilshere to West Ham United on a free transfer.
The number change didn’t affect his shirt sale as he finished top ahead of Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, summer signing Lucas Torreira, Alexandre Lacazette and another new signing Bernd Leno in second, third, fourth and fifth position respectively.
Armenian international midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, former Borussia Moenchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, contract rebel Aaron Ramsey, new signings Stephan Lichtsteiner and Matteo Guendouzi completes the top ten.
Four of the club’s five summer signings featured in the top ten.
Retired German international midfielder Mesut Ozil seems to have turned the corner after a shaky start under new manager Unai Emery.
He had an eventful summer which saw him retire from the national team after German officials criticised him heavily for his poor showing at this summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.
He reportedly had a bust-up with Unai Emery but the former Real Madrid star has recovered well to contribute to the Gunners’ amazing run of eight successive victories in all competitions.
He has scored three goals in the last five matches.
