Premier League giants Manchester United have reportedly joined the scramble for the signature of Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella ahead of the next transfer window scheduled for the New Year.

According to the report from popular Italian news portal Football Italia, the Red Devils are the sixth team to show interest in the 21-year-old.

Other European teams interested in signing Barella include Manchester United’s rivals Liverpool and the Italian quartet of Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and capital club AS Roma.

Nicolo Barella could have moved away from Cagliari when this summer’s transfer window was opened but he opted to stay with his boyhood club.

He has already been invited to the Italian senior national team setup but Barella is yet to feature for the three-time world champions.

Barella would be a quality addition to a Manchester United side that has come under severe scrutiny following a largely unimpressive start to the new season.

The former Champions League winners were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford at the third round stage by Championship club Derby County.

Frank Lampard’s side won 8-7 on penalties after both sides played out a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation time.

The Carabao Cup exit came on the back of the disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last league outing.

The Wolves draw left Manchester United eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool in the race for the title.
