During his time at Napoli, Maurizio Sarri was linked with a move for Cagliari youngster Nicolo Barella but he was unable to complete a deal for the youngster before heading to Stamford Bridge.
The Italian manager is very much keen on getting the 21-year-old midfielder and reports claimed he sent his scouts to keep a close watch on the player’s performance against Sampdoria during the week.
The midfielder didn’t disappoint in the game against Sampdoria and that means Sarri could be making a big-money move for the player’s services in January.
However, Sarri faces huge competition from his Premier League rival José Mourinho in the race to capture the youngster’s signature.
Despite United’s reported crises, the club’s hierarchy are currently planning ahead of the next transfer market as they hope to bolster Mourinho’s desire to win the Premier League title this season by signing quality players to the team.
According to reports emanating from Old Trafford, the Red Devils board members are keenly interested in Nicolo Barella and they are set to make move for his signature in January.
It was reported during the summer window that Barella turned down the chance to sign up for Mourinho’s team, claiming he wants to remain with the Serie A side so as to continue getting regular game-time.
He admitted that there is intense competition for a place in the Portuguese starting lineup, so, he won’t want to move to a club where a regular action is not guaranteed.
Cagliari are hoping to receive nothing less than €50m from his suitors in January and it remains to be seen if Chelsea or United are ready to spend big on him.
