It was reported that Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Southampton defender Cedric Soares during the summer window but their big-money offer failed to materialize.
According to FC Nordsjælland defender Karlo Bartolec, the Portuguese defender was preparing for a switch to Old Trafford before the close of the transfer period but the Saints made a last-minute move to block the deal from materializing.
Speaking to 24sata , as translated by Sport Witness, Bartolec revealed that he should have moved to Southampton as Cedric’s replacement but he couldn’t, due to the fact that the Red Devils couldn’t achieve their desire to lure the former Sporting CP defender to the Theater of Dreams.
Mourinho was so desperate to add a player to his defensive unit before the close of the summer transfer window but all his efforts were all fruitless.
He was linked with Harry Maguire (Leicester City), Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), David Luiz (Chelsea), Yerry Mina (then Barcelona) Raphael Varane ( Real Madrid) but none of the listed players was able to join the Portuguese manager before the end of the summer window.
It’s left to be seen if Mourinho would reignite his interest in the Southampton defender when transfer market reopens in January.
Cedric Soares is valued £24m by the Saints. He has featured in all the matches played by Southampton so far this season but he’s yet to score a goal.
