Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been tagged the best candidate to replace José Mourinho at Old Trafford, should the club sack the Portuguese manager this season.

The Frenchman wasn’t a close pal to Mourinho during his reign at the Emirates Stadium but pundits have chosen him to become the Portuguese successor.

BeIN Sport Premier League presenter Richard Keys suggested the former Gunners manager as the best manager to continue from where Mourinho stopped if the club eventually proceed with their proposed plans to sack the former Real Madrid and Porto manager.

According to him, Wenger has managed top players for more than 22 years, so, taking over as United boss won’t be a stage too high for him.

Keys also said that Wenger is conversant with the way things are done in the League playing style, hectic fixtures, surprises and fans, the Frenchman need no time to get used to the club’s mentality.

Since he ended his relationship with the Gunners last season, Wenger is yet to get a club but there are many clubs reported to have developed interest in his signature.

It was reported in May via numerous sources that Scotland are interested in his services but the 68-year-old tactician is yet to respond to the offer.

In his 22 years reign at the Emirates Stadium, Wenger won the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, Carabao among others, though he didn’t lay hands on Champions League.

“I will match and raise you Arsene Wenger,” he said.

“Let me put a bit of meat on the bone. Managed big players all of his life,  Knows plenty about the English Premier League. He has won everything there is to win apart from the Champions League.

He certainly can handle big players. Managed a big football club and he’s available.
