Manchester United have been a longtime admirer of Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti and they have made an official approach towards capturing his signature in the summer.
The Frenchman has been in great form for the Catalans since he made his switch to Camp Nou from Ligue 1 side Lyon in 2016 and that was the reason behind Mourinho’s longtime desire to sign him during the previous transfer periods.
However, the Portuguese manager will need to look elsewhere for a new defender after Samuel Umtiti reportedly signed a new contract with Barcelona in the early hours of Today.
The La Liga Champions confirmed, via their official Twitter account, that the Frenchman has agreed to extend his stay at Camp Nou for another five years and that would keep him with the club until 2023.
Despite being away with the France national team — who are preparing for the summer world cup, the Catalans revealed that the defender will officially sign a new contract on Monday( tomorrow).
Real Madrid were also believed to be on the player’s radar as they hope to get a young defender, who will replace Sergio Ramos in the nearest future.
With this report, Umtiti is now free from every off-field issue that could distract him from performing brilliantly for Didier Deschamps’ team during the summer World Cup in Russia.
