World’s most expensive defender Virgil van Dijk has been criticized by Chelsea and United Fans for his role in the goal conceded by Liverpool against City in last night’s Champions League quarter-final return leg clash at Anfield.

Manchester City took the lead via Gabriel Jesus’ goal after a schoolboy display from the Dutchman who was bullied off the ball by Raheem Sterling.

The player was once targeted by Chelsea manager Antonio Conte during the last winter transfer but the Italian manager couldn’t get his signature as he was beaten by Jurgen Klopp to the player’s signature when the Merseyside club broke their transfer record to capture the former Southampton man.

Van Dijk was also wanted by Pep Guardiola but just as Conte, he missed out on the chance to work with the Dutchman after failing to lure him to the Etihad Stadium.

Despite scoring the first goal of the night, Manchester City failed to pull a shocking result against the Reds as they were defeated 2-1 by their opponents for the third time this season.

With the result, Liverpool are through to the Semi-final of the European competition, while Pep Guardiola’s hope of winning a treble was completely dashed with the defeat.

The fit-again striker, Mohammed Salah and Firmino got the goals for the five-time Champions League winner to give Liverpool a 5-1 aggregate victory over the Citizens.

Here are some top comments from fans on social media ;

According to Harsha, a Manchester United fan, suggest he would rather love to have Smalling in his team than Van Dijk.

(@ThoseScouseLads) believed Sterling made Van Dijk sweat for the first time in Liverpool’s jersey.

Leak Anfield Leak suggests the Dutchman was ridiculously looking for a foul instead of clearing the ball of sterling’s feet.
