Many fans and pundits criticized José Mourinho having seen the Portuguese starting lineup against Sevilla in the Champions League last-16 first leg tie last week. This is because a relatively unknown Manchester United youngster Scott Mctominay was preferred ahead of club-record signing Paul Pogba in the middle of the pitch despite the importance attached to the game.
To the surprise of many — even senior players in the team — Mctominay’s performance during the match was the most impressive display from United’s outfield players throughout the encounter.
After his display against Sevilla, the 21-year-old player became more prominent in Mourinho’s lineup. Fans have learned to show some respect for the largely inexperienced youngster.
Despite the rivalry between two Premier League giants, Manchester United and Chelsea, Mctominay stood his ground when both teams met, ensuring that the Blues have no freedom to operate at the middle of the pitch throughout the game.
Apart from his brilliant individual performances, the Manchester United youngster has developed a great partnership with Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba at the middle of the pitch and that has created more room for the Frenchman to operate in a more advanced position.
Matic, who have been impressed with what he has seen so far from the youngster, praised him for his maturity during games and he predicted that the 21-year-old will go high places should he maintain his humility, hard-work and steady growth.
Mctominay has been nominated alongside Romelu Lukaku and David De Gea for Manchester United’s player of the month
