Will Smith Resigns from Motion Picture Academy over Chris Rock Oscar Slap Incident

Will Smith resigned from his membership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences following an incident between him and Chris Rock.

Smith released an apology saying that he had "betrayed the trust of Academy" and promised not to do it again.

"The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home," Smith said.

"I betrayed the trust of the Academy."

Furthermore, Smith said, "I want to focus on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film."

This is a massive blow for the Academy as Smith was one of their most influential members. He will no longer be able to vote in any official capacity.

Smith's resignation came when the Academy investigated his actions on March 27.

He slapped Rock after he compared Jada Pinkett to G.I Jane that night.
