Cristiano Ronaldo, the highly touted soccer player, and Real Madrid's all-time leading goalscorer, announced that he had lost his baby son during labour.

On Monday, the footballer took to Instagram, sharing his and his wife's pain while saying that their newborn "daughter is giving us the strength to live".

He shared a joint statement on Instagram to express their 'greatest pain' with fans.

Today our family lost the most beautiful and precious gift we could ever imagine.

"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away".

"It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel," the pair post added

"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss, and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time" the statement read.
