Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes that Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk should have won the Best Player Award at the FIFA Awards held on Monday night ahead of recipient Lionel Messi.
Ian Wright spoke about the FIFA Awards on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.
According to him, Virgil Van Dijk deserves the award ahead of Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
The Barcelona skipper both Van Dijk and Juventus talisman Cristiano Ronaldo to the award after his exploits for the Catalan club in the Spanish La Liga and the Champions League last season.
Lionel Messi was the star player for Barcelona as they regained their league title ahead of nearest challengers Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

The Argentine international was also the topscorer during last season’s Champions League campaign as Barcelona fell at the semifinal stage.
On his part, Virgil Van Dijk helped Liverpool stop Barcelona in the last four stage of last season’s Champions League campaign.
Barcelona won their home leg 3-0 before Liverpool overturned that first leg deficit in the second leg played at their home.
The Reds thrashed Barcelona 4-0 to advance to the next stage.
Van Dijk went on to captain the Dutch team to the UEFA Nations League final before they lost 1-0 to host nation Portugal.
