Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was said to have played an important role in Virgil Van Dijk joining Liverpool at the start of last year according to the latest reports emanating from the media in the United Kingdom (UK).
The Dutch international centre back is presently on the payroll of European champions Liverpool.
According to the specific publication from The Independent, Manchester United were in the running to sign Van Dijk from Southampton until then manager, Jose Mourinho intervened.
The Portuguese tactician was said to have opposed the signing of Virgil Van Dijk during the January transfer window last year.
Manchester United pulled out of the running to sign Van Dijk and that paved the way for the Dutchman to join Liverpool from Southampton in a club-record transfer.

The transfer made him the most expensive defender in the history of world football.
Liverpool paid £75m to sign him from Southampton in January 2018.
Virgil Van Dijk has been an influential signing for Liverpool.
