Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi has been rewarded for his stellar performances for club and country in the last year after he was named the 2019 FIFA Men’s Player of the Year.
He was named the award recipient at the FIFA Best Awards Ceremony held in Milan, Italy on Monday night.
The Argentine international won the award ahead of Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk and Juventus talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.
Lionel Messi had a phenomenal year for Barcelona which saw him win the Spanish La Liga title with his team.
In addition, he also won the Golden Boot Award in the Spanish top flight last season.

Messi was the topscorer in the Champions League last season but he could do nothing as his Barcelona side collapsed during the second leg of their semifinal clash with eventual Champions League winners Liverpool.
He scored two goals for Barcelona as the Catalans defeated visitors Liverpool 3-0 during the first leg of their Champions League semifinal clash last season.
Messi and Barcelona went on to crash out at the semifinal stage for the second straight season following their collapse at Anfield.
Liverpool thrashed Barcelona 4-0 at home in the second leg to move into the next stage via a 4-3 aggregate win.
