Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele has been ruled out of action for five weeks with a hamstring injury.

The Spanish La Liga giants announced the injury to the Frenchman on Monday.

The new development is a big blow to Barcelona who started the season with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to hosts Athletic Bilbao.

Ousmane Dembele played the entire duration of that game against Athletic Bilbao.

The French international is in his third season at Barcelona and his time at the club has been characterized by various injury problems.

Dembele signed for Barcelona from German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017 following the exit of Neymar to French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG).

Barcelona signed Ousmane Dembele as the direct replacement for Neymar who sealed a world-record transfer of €220m to PSG.

Dembele is the latest Barcelona attacker to be struck down with injury after the duo of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Messi missed the Athletic Bilbao game on Friday with a calf injury, while Luis Suarez was substituted in the first half of the match played at the San Mames.

Athletic Bilbao won the league game 1-0 courtesy the 89th-minute bicycle kick from second half substitute Aritz Aduriz.
