Newly promoted Premier League club Aston Villa are reportedly battling North London giants Arsenal for the signature of former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill.

This is according to the publication from the stables of football365 which claimed that the Gunners want to sign the ex-England international centre back.

Arsenal want to sign Gary Cahill on a free transfer after his contract with Chelsea expired at the end of June.

The Europa League finalists want to offer Gary Cahill a one-year deal but the player is holding out for a two-year contract until the end of the 2020/21.

Gary Cahill ended his seven-year association with Chelsea this summer after his contract ended.

The former Aston Villa player signed for Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers during the 2012 winter transfer window.

The Blues paid £7m to sign Gary Cahill from League One club Bolton Wanderers.

He went on to make 290 appearances for Chelsea whom he helped to secure the 2012 Champions League title, 2013 Europa League and three Premier League titles.

Gary Cahill is also the subject of interest from former club Aston Villa especially because of former Chelsea teammate John Terry who’s now the assistant manager at Villa Park.

The defender is said to prefer staying in London and that has almost ruled out a move to Aston Villa.
