Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard could replace Rafael Benitez at Premier League club Newcastle United this summer according to the latest reports emanating from the media in the United Kingdom.
Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United this month at the end of his contract with the Magpies.
According to the publication from the Daily Express, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is on a three-man managerial shortlist.
The likes of Laurent Blanc and David Moyes have expressed their interest in the vacant Newcastle United job but both managers were conspicuously absent on the list.
Apart from current Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira also made the shortlist.
Newcastle United had previously spoken to ex-Arsenal skipper Arteta about the managerial job at the club in 2015 before Steve McLaren was named the Magpies manager.
Steve McLaren was sacked after some months and replaced by the aforementioned Benitez in 2016.
Apart from Mikel Arteta and Steven Gerrard, former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira is also on the managerial shortlist.
He led OGC Nice to seventh spot at the end of the latest French Ligue 1 season.
Before the OGC Nice job, the ex-Arsenal skipper has been in charge of Major League Soccer (MLS) club New York City FC and the Manchester City youth team before that.
