Gareth Southgate’s side kicked off their EURO 2020 Qualifiers on a bright note as they defeated Czech Republic at home.
It was an interesting contest as English fans trooped in numbers to watch their darling team; the Three Lions do battle with the Czech side in the Match day 1 of the European qualifiers.
It was a spectacular evening for the host most especially in the second half as they scored three more goals to send a message to other group oppositions. This was made easy as defender Tomas Kalas scored an own goal to make it 5-0 in favour of England.
With the convincing win over Czech Republic, we evaluate the three significant points as the host flourished at the Wembley Stadium.
Hat-Trick for Raheem Sterling
The in-form striker got on the score sheet three times to help his side to an impressive win. It’s a special night for the Manchester City star as he completed his hat-trick with the aid of a deflection.
Sterling gave the Lions the lead in the 24th minutes before Harry Kane scored from the spot in the first half stoppage time (last kick of the half). These goals gave the home side the leverage (immense advantage) going into the half time break.
It forced the visitors (Czech Republic) to make changes in the second half as the game opened up with further goals for England. Sterling scored the second turning in the penalty area to fire into the far corner with the Czech goalkeeper well beaten in goal.
This sealed the win as Sterling was exemplary on the night, to say the least as he picked up the match ball in England’s resounding victory.
Impressive Debut for Hudson-Odoi
The talented Chelsea youngster marked his debut with a sensational display as he came on for Raheem Sterling as soon as the City forward got his hat-trick in the game. He proved a point on the pitch as he combined superbly with his side going forward.
Odoi was a constant threat as his movement on the ball and decision making was menacing to the visitors. H really impressed against the Czech side as he looks sharp and calculative (assertive) thus testing the goalkeeper a couple of times.
His attacking guile forced the fifth goal as Tom Kalas mistakenly bundled the ball into his own net to complete the 5-0 routing for the Three Lions.
England Sets the Standards
This is the best possible start for the English side as they defeated arguably the toughest side in their qualifying group. The result gives England an early advantage both for confidence sake and goal difference stakes while they maintain focus in subsequent games.
The home fans wouldn’t have asked for more as Czech has got their own pedigree with respect to the likes of Petr Cech and Tomas Rosicky. It was a match the three Loins flourished as there was plenty of pace and dynamism in their gameplay.
Gareth Southgate would be pleased with his team’s performance as they beat Czech Republic who is the strongest opposition to England (quest to qualify) road to the EURO 2020 Championship in France next year.
