An Arsenal fan has been arrested after he invaded the pitch during the Gunners’ Premier League clash with Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.
The unnamed male fan was taken into police custody after his misdemeanour.
He invaded the pitch shortly after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the Gunners’ second goal from the spot before shoving Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
Arsenal confirmed the arrest of the pitch invader via a statement and also apologised to Chris Smalling as well as Manchester United whom they beat 2-0 to steal a march on them in the keenly contested race for a top-four finish at the end of the current Premier League season.
Arsenal had taken a first-half lead courtesy an unstoppable 12th minute shot from midfielder Granit Xhaka with Manchester United shot-stopper David De Gea wrong-footed.
Manchester United had chances to score but they were denied by both the post and Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno on several occasions.
Belgian international star Romelu Lukaku was the main culprit for the Red Devils who have now lost their place in the top four as a result of the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.
The pitch invasion from the Arsenal fan was the second incident of the day in English football after Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish was assaulted by a Birmingham City fan during their derby clash on Sunday afternoon.
Grealish went on to score the winning goal for Aston Villa.
The two incidents have raised concerns over the safety of players.
