Struggling Premier League outfit Newcastle United have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins.
The Daily Mail claim that the Magpies have made a loan enquiry for the Portuguese international player.
Gelson Martins was a member of the 23-man Portugal squad to last summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.
The European champions crashed out of the tournament at the first knockout stage after they were beaten 2-1 by South American nation Uruguay.
The 23-year-old moved to Spanish La Liga giants Atletico Madrid from Portuguese Super League club Sporting Lisbon immediately after the World Cup tournament in Russia.
He has not made the impact that was expected of him at the Wanda Metropolitano since he joined the club at the start of the season.
Apart from the Magpies, Gelson Martins has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal this month.
The Gunners have lost England international forward Danny Welbeck to long-term injury and Gelson Martins could be a like-for-like replacement for him.
Atletico Madrid are keen to get his wages off their wage bill having already added Spanish striker Alvaro Morata to their playing squad.
Morata is closing in on a loan move to Atletico for the remainder of the season with the obligation to make the transfer permanent in the summer.
