Manchester United have been handed a big transfer boost after city rivals Manchester City pulled out of the race to sign one of their transfer targets.

Popular media outlet Metro claim that the Citizens have pulled out of the chase for highly rated Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Frenkie De Jong.

Manchester City were said to have opted out of the race for De Jong after French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG) entered the race to sign the player.

De Jong, 21, has previously been touted as a possible midfield addition to the playing squad at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United midfield was in the spotlight earlier in the season when Jose Mourinho was the Red Devils manager.

Frenkie De Jong is one of the hottest properties on the European football scene after his series of impressive outings for his Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax Amsterdam.

He has been a key player for Ajax for the majority of the last two seasons.

De Jong played a big role in the Ajax team that reached the first knockout stage of the Champions League this season.

Ajax will face Spanish La Liga club Real Madrid for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
