North London giants Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that they have extended the contract of defender Toby Alderweireld until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Belgian international centre back Toby Alderweireld has been a top transfer target for the Red Devils dating back to the summer when Tottenham Hotspur were able to repel the interest of Manchester United.

Former Southampton and Atletico Madrid star Toby Alderweireld had six months left on his Tottenham Hotspur contract before the club took up the option of activating the additional year in the contract thus taking him till the end of next season.

It was also revealed that there’s a £25m release clause that will expire after the first two weeks of this summer’s transfer window.

Manchester United have made the signing of a new centre back their priority in the transfer market and Toby Alderweireld is one of the defenders mentioned as possible defensive signings for the Red Devils.

The three-time European champions have been poor defensively this season but the exit of Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho as the Manchester United manager has coincided with more defensive solidity for the team under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They have conceded just three goals in four league games under Solskjaer in comparison to 28 goals conceded in 17 games under Mourinho.
