English Premier League outfit Newcastle are reportedly set to seal a deal for German Bundesliga outfit Frankfurt defender Jetro Willems in the winter transfer window which reopens in coming weeks.

The star defender was earlier being linked with a move to English Premier League leaders Liverpool but the Reds seem to have backed out which gives Newcastle the free ride for the player.

The Merseyside see no need for Jetro Willems with the solid performances of their defenders with former Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez already sealing the position.

However, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is reported to be a big fan of the defender and has not hidden his desire to have him join the club for the second half of the season.

The 27-year-old who joined the German Bundesliga side in 2017 has caught the attention of clubs in England which means his stay with Frankfurt might come to an end in coming days.

Jetro Willems has been tipped to cost Newcastle the sum of £4.5 million which is believed to be affordable for the Magpies with a bid expected to be submitted in coming days.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool side have been able to work out a compact defence line which makes the arrival of new players unlikely.
