North London giants Arsenal are considering whether or not to make a short-term bid to sign experienced Chelsea defender Gary Cahill ahead of the upcoming transfer window scheduled to start in the next two weeks.

The Gunners had earlier been linked with the 32-year-old and fresharsenal claim that the North Londoners are ready to firm up their interest with a bid to sign the recently retired England international.

Gary Cahill has six months left on his current Chelsea contract and Arsenal could loan him for the remainder of his Blues deal or sign him permanently in a cut-price deal.

New Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has already told the player that he can leave Stamford Bridge and that he can’t give him more playing time.

The Blues skipper has lost his place in the Chelsea starting XI since former Napoli boss Sarri replaced Antonio Conte as the Blues manager in the summer.

Arsenal are in the midst of a defensive crisis following the injuries to Rob Holding, Shkrodan Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac and manager Unai Emery is keen to boost his squad with a possible short-term solution in the January transfer window.

The defensive problems came to the fore on Sunday when Arsenal were beaten 3-2 at Southampton thus ending their 22-game unbeaten run.
