Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is close to signing a new contract at the club according to The Times.
The Spanish international player has six months remaining on his current contract with the Red Devils thus leading to intense transfer rumours about a move away from Old Trafford.
Herrera, 29, has been linked with a return back to Spain with Athletic Bilbao.
He signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2014 after Manchester United activated the release clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract.
Since his move, the midfield maestro has scored 18 goals and provided 25 assists in 171 games in all competitions.
Ander Herrera could return to the Basque outfit in the New Year.
The Spaniard can start free transfer negotiations with foreign clubs as from the 1st of January.
Ander Herrera has been an integral part of an underperforming Manchester United team this term.
The Red Devils have started the season poorly with the club presently struggling in the eighth spot.
Manchester United have 23 points from the first 15 league games of the season thus leaving them 18 points off the leaders and city rivals Manchester City.
In addition, the Red Devils are eight points off the top four places on the current Premier League table.
