Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has given up hopes of signing his number one transfer target ahead of the upcoming transfer market scheduled to begin as from the 1st of January.
Metro claims that the Portuguese tactician has accepted defeat in his bid to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during the winter transfer window.
Earlier reports had revealed that the 27-year-old was his number one defensive target as he tries to boost his ailing Manchester United defence.
The Red Devils defence has been a shadow of its former self.
Manchester United had the best defensive record in the Premier League last season but the team has one of the worst records this season.
The defence has conceded 23 goals in just 14 league games of the new league campaign.
Mourinho has already identified the aforementioned Koulibaly as the man to improve his defence but his club is not willing to let one of its prized assets leave the club on the cheap.
The Italian Serie A giants have already knocked back a big bid for the Senegalese centre-back and the aforementioned publication says that Napoli will only sanction the player’s sale if they can get at least £94m pounds for him.
