Arsenal legend Alan Smith has called on the club to sign a new defender when the mid-season transfer window reopens in the next few weeks.
The former Arsenal striker talked about the Gunners’ need for a new centre-back in a chat with the London Evening Standard.
He advised new Arsenal boss to delve into the transfer market to sign a new centre back.
Alan Smith further stated that the North Londoners are in need of a replacement for the erratic Shkrodan Mustafi.
The German World Cup winner has enjoyed a mixed spell for Arsenal since he signed for the club from Spanish La Liga side in the summer of 2016.
Mustafi has been a mainstay of the Arsenal squad since Unai Emery took over in the summer.
The 47-year-old signed a three-year deal with Arsenal to replace long-serving manager Arsene Wenger who spent almost 22 years in North London and also led the Gunners to three Premier League titles and seven FA Cup titles.
Unai Emery beefed up his defence with the addition of experienced centre-back Sokratis Papasthathopoulos but it has proved not to be enough especially with the presence of the aforementioned Mustafi.
Arsenal have kept just two clean sheets in 13 Premier League games this season.
