Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has explained how Manchester United got lucky during their game against Everton at the weekend.

According to him via popular English news portal Daily Star, Manchester United should not have been awarded a first half penalty during the game.

The Red Devils were given a penalty after Everton midfielder Idrissa ‘Gana’ Gueye was adjudged to have brought down French winger Anthony Martial in the penalty box.

France World Cup winner Paul Pogba scored from the rebound after his spot kick was saved by the Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 27th minute.

Pogba was also instrumental to the Red Devils’ second goal scored by the aforementioned Martial after four second half minutes.

The French winger has now scored in three straight league matches.

The 22-year-old was on target in the 3-2 comeback victory over struggling Newcastle United before netting a brace during last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The former AS Monaco star has scored four goals in the last three games in the Premier League.

Everton pulled one back through a 77th minute penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson after Manchester United defender Chris Smalling brought down Richarlison in the box.

Manchester United thereafter held on to take the points.
