Manchester United could face a sanction from European football’s governing body, UEFA, after three fans invaded the pitch during their Champions League defeat at the hands of Juventus on Tuesday night.

One fan ran the length of the Old Trafford pitch and towards Cristiano Ronaldo before he was tackled by the Manchester United stewards.

The Juventus superstar gave the fan a high five while he was being whisked away.

Two others tried to get close to the Portuguese international star while he walked off into the dressing room at the end of the game with chants of ‘Viva Ronaldo’.

The five-time Ballon d’or winner was the cynosure of all eyes during the Champions League meeting as he was making his second return to his former hunting ground since his transfer to Real Madrid in a £80m deal in 2009.

His first return to Manchester United came in 2013 also came in the Champions League when his Real Madrid recorded a 2-1 win.

He played a big role in Juventus’ 1-0 win over the Red Devils on Tuesday night after providing the assist for goalscorer Paolo Dybala in the 17th minute.

Top four rivals Tottenham Hotspur had earlier been fined €15,000 for a similar incident in their Europa League clash with Partizan Belgrade in December 2014.
