Alexis Sanchez might have saved Jose Mourinho’s job as Manchester United manager after he came off the bench to score the winner in the Red Devils’ 3-2 win over Newcastle United at home.
Manchester United came from two goals down to secure a first victory at home since the 2-1 victory over Leicester City on the opening day of the new Premier League season.
The Red Devils had to do it the hard way after Newcastle United stunned their hosts with two goals in ten minutes through Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto.
Newcastle United thereafter wasted several opportunities to add to the earlier goals and it came back to haunt manager Rafael Benitez and his wards following the Red Devils’ revival with three goals in the last twenty minutes.
Substitute Juan Manuel Mata had come on for Eric Bailly very early in the first half and he was the catalyst for the revival.
The Spanish international midfielder pulled one back on 70 minutes before Anthony Martial equalised off an assist from Paul Pogba six minutes later and that paved the way for Sanchez to head in the winner on the stroke of full-time.
The late victory would go a long way to ease the pressure on under-fire manager Jose Mourinho.
Why Chelsea will not qualify for Champions League next season
West London outfit Chelsea have been condemned in their bid for a Champions League qualification with a top-four finish in the Premier League table.
The Blues are currently in sixth position on the league table behind Arsenal and Man United with their latest 2-0 defeat against Everton ensuring that they are more distanced from the fourth spot.
The defeat against Everton makes it the Blues 7th defeat in the Premier League this season and that seem to be unacceptable to the fans and the club owner.
However, former Blues midfielder Craig Burley argues that some players deserve more playing time than they are been given by manager Maurizio Sarri noting that the ones who are being played have not been productive enough.
He laments the fact that Ruben Loftus-Cheek has not been given enough playing time while Jorginho has had more than enough, yet the midfield has been unproductive with the defeat always coming from their lack of efficiency at the middle.
The Sky Sports pundit said Chelsea’s problem started with the system of play by the former Napoli boss, noting that N’Golo Kante is being missed in the deep role at the midfield as Jorginho has not been doing his job.
He, therefore, argued that Sarri could be sacked but has the Europa League to save his job.
Why Chelsea is to blame for Arsenal’s ‘difficult’ situation
Arsenal are now left with no choice than to play their second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals at Naples, away from home, according to Sky Sports pundit and former Man City right-back Danny Mills.
It is claimed that under a number circumstances, the North London outfit are supposed to play the first leg away before playing the second one home because they were drawn out of the hat after the Italian Serie A outfit but that will not happen in this case.
This is because the West London outfit Chelsea were drawn away for the first leg with Slavia Prague and are expected to play at home at the Stamford Bridge for the second leg.
However, because of the rule that clubs from the same city cannot play at home at the same time, one of the teams have to be sacrificed and the Gunners were the victim.
The Sky Sports pundit is of the opinion that the development puts Arsenal in a difficult situation as it would have been best for them to begin away so that they can comfortably seal qualification at home.
He noted that playing the second leg away at the San Paolo Stadium is a big disadvantage for Arsenal because of the atmosphere the Napoli home ground is known for.
Major relief for Sarri after big claim made
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has been under fire especially after his team suffered another defeat to Everton at the weekend to keep them distanced from the race for a top-four finish.
The 2-0 defeat suffered against the Toffees makes it the West London’s 7th defeat in the Premier League this season and it has been unacceptable to the fans and the club owner Roman Abramovich.
Suggestions are that the Italian boss would be sacked during the international break by the club owner after due consultations have been made as it is becoming obvious he will not meet with the target of returning the club to the Champion League next season with Arsenal and Man United already ahead.
However, this is the first time the former Napoli boss will have a defence after a former Man United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen said Maurizio Sarri should not be sacked but should be allowed to continue until the end of the season.
He noted that just like every other coach, Maurizio Sarri needs more time to be able to have his team play the way he wants them to before they can be able to secure a good result.
The former United assistant coach said Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp has the same experience and now he is kicking with his team again. He is of the opinion that the same can be said of Sarri if handed more time.
Why we need not worry about Salah, Van Dijk
Egyptian international forward and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has not been in a good goalscoring form so far this season and that has raised a lot of concerns from his fans but there is nothing to worry about, according to defender Virgil Van Dijk.
Last season was a blast for the former AS Roma player as he emerged as the Premier League’s highest goalscorer and scored an average of a goal per game but that is yet to repeat itself.
What is most disturbing is that Mohamed Salah has not scored a goal in his last 7 games, the longest barren run for the star player in a very long time.
However, Virgil Van Dijk has stated that there is nothing to worry about expressing confidence that Mohamed Salah will soon start scoring again. He is of the opinion that the international break is a big advantage for the star player to rest, noting that he will return fresh to begin scoring goals.
Senegal international Sadio Mane has been the man providing the cover for the Egyptian international as he has been hitting the back of the net in almost all games. The Fulham game makes it his 11th goal in 11 games.
Liverpool duo to fight for PFA award
So far, two Liverpool players are qualified to fight for the award of the best Premier League player, according to Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison.
According to the pundit, Senegal international Sadio Mane and defender Virgil Van Dijk have done well to contend for the award after an impressive season so far. The two Liverpool stars have been consistent in their fine form without any obstruction as a result of injuries or sort.
Virgil Van Dijk who left Southampton in January 2018 has been in sensational form for the Reds and has established himself as one of the best defenders in the league. He has been hailed for bringing the stability in the manager Jurgen Klopp’s defence. This is no doubt a major reason why they are able to challenge for the league title.
Also, Sadio Mane has been in fine form for the Reds team. The goal against Fulham makes it his 11th goal in his last 11 games for Liverpool to set a record of the highest Senegalese goal scorer in the Premier League per season.
So far, he has scored 17 goals in the Premier League and made 1 assist to make him the man of the moment for the Reds team.
Should Liverpool go ahead to win the league title, there is no doubt that Mane would be considered.
Van Dijk makes spectacular claim after Fulham win
There is no doubt that the Fulham win for Liverpool is a big relief as they are now confident that they can further push for the title until the end of the season.
The game was almost lost for the Reds after the former Southampton defender made committed a blunder which cost his side a goal but there was still an opportunity for the manager Jurgen Klopp side to correct the wrong as they ended the game in a 2-1 win.
All thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and James Milner’s penalty, Liverpool are now top on the Premier League table with two points clear off Man City but the Citizens still have a game at hand to recover their top spot.
This makes the race very tough and unlikely for both sides but Virgil Van Dijk says his team can win the Premier League title.
He noted that his team are in a fantastic position and they enjoy all that is happening as they are focused that they will smile at the end of the season.
However, Virgil Van Dijk confessed that they have a big task ahead to win over Man City as well as tackle the games in the Champions League.
Liverpool receive damning message from club president over 27-year-old star
Liverpool have been told by Italian Serie A outfit Napoli that they will not be allowed to land the signature of striker Lorenzo Insigne ahead of the coming summer transfer window.
The Reds team have been linked with the star player for a long period of time but they have not been successful in their bid and there are fears that the situation will remain the same after Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis made it clear that the player is going nowhere.
Lorenzo Insigne has been impressive for Napoli this season, having scored 13 goals and handed 7 assists across all competitions to make him the main man for manager Carlo Ancelotti. It would be an impossible deal to have him leave the club at the end of the season.
The Napoli president has made it clear that Lorenzo Insigne is not in the market for sale, hence the club will not listen to any offers for him.
The president hailed Lorenzo Insigne as an attractive player who is extraordinary, hence there is no way they would want to lose him because there are only a few players like him
Meanwhile, suggestions are that the Reds will have a more robust attack with Lorenzo Insigne should they succeed in convincing Napoli.
Zidane orders Madrid to get him Liverpool race
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has reportedly ordered the club to secure him the signature of Liverpool forward Sadio Mane ahead of the coming summer transfer window.
The France international boss is having his second spell with the Spanish giants and wants to bring in some quality players that will help him return the team to winning ways after suffering some inconsistent results in the past.
This season has been a bad one for the Los Blancos as they were humiliated out of the Champions League by Ajax and they have also crashed out of the Copa Del Rey which makes them ready for a campaign without a trophy, knowing that they are 12 points off the title race.
Senegal international has caught the attention of Zinedine Zidane, who returned to the club last week and there are fears that the Merseyside outfit will have to fight to keep the inform player because the La Liga giants will make efforts to lure him away.
Sadio Mane has now scored 11 goals in his last 11 games for Liverpool which makes him the man of the moment, a development that has caught the attention of Madrid boss.
However, suggestions are that the decision would be left to Sadio to make but he still has a running contract with the Reds team.
Arsenal Face Spanish Opposition For 4-Goal Leverkusen Star
One-time Champions League finalists Arsenal will have to fend off the interest of two Spanish clubs in the bid to sign highly-rated Bayern Leverkusen forward Julian Brandt.
The interest of the Spanish clubs was revealed by popular German newspaper Sport Bild.
It was revealed that the Spanish La Liga duo of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are keeping tabs on the situation of Julian Brandt.
The German international has previously been linked with a move to Arsenal but the Gunners interest in the player appeared to have waned in recent months.
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been saddled with the responsibility of rebuilding the European champions following his reappointment last week and Julian Brandt could be an option for him.
Brandt has scored four goals and provided a whopping ten assists for Bayer Leverkusen in 25 Bundesliga appearances this term.
French football legend Zidane returned to Real Madrid as their manager earlier this month having resigned from the job last summer.
Real Madrid have already sacked two coaches for poor performance and Zidane’s appointment makes it the third for the Los Merengues.
Zidane began his second managerial spell with a much needed 2-0 win over Celta Vigo courtesy goals from Isco and Gareth Bale.
Arsenal To Reignite Interest In La Liga Defender
Premier League giants Arsenal will revive their interest in Getafe defender Djene Dakonam in their bid to sign a new centre back ahead of next season.
This is according to the publication from trusted Spanish newspaper which claimed that the Gunners are ready to reignite their interest in the 27-year-old centre back.
Djene Dakonam has previously been linked with a move to North London especially during the winter transfer window but the defender opted to stay with Getafe.
Transfer rumours about him and Arsenal have soared in the last few hours after Gunners boss Unai Emery was in attendance as his Getafe target played out an impressive goalless draw at the home of Valencia.
Djene Dakonam was impressive at the Mestalla as they came away with a point that was enough to preserve their place in the top four of the Spanish La Liga table alongside leaders Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid and at the expense of more illustrious opponents like Sevilla, Deportivo Alaves and Valencia.
Arsenal have made the signing of a new centre back their top priority ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
Apart from the centre back position, the Gunners also want to strengthen the left-back and right-wing positions.
