Alexis Sanchez might have saved Jose Mourinho’s job as Manchester United manager after he came off the bench to score the winner in the Red Devils’ 3-2 win over Newcastle United at home.
Manchester United came from two goals down to secure a first victory at home since the 2-1 victory over Leicester City on the opening day of the new Premier League season.
The Red Devils had to do it the hard way after Newcastle United stunned their hosts with two goals in ten minutes through Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto.
Newcastle United thereafter wasted several opportunities to add to the earlier goals and it came back to haunt manager Rafael Benitez and his wards following the Red Devils’ revival with three goals in the last twenty minutes.
Substitute Juan Manuel Mata had come on for Eric Bailly very early in the first half and he was the catalyst for the revival.
The Spanish international midfielder pulled one back on 70 minutes before Anthony Martial equalised off an assist from Paul Pogba six minutes later and that paved the way for Sanchez to head in the winner on the stroke of full-time.
The late victory would go a long way to ease the pressure on under-fire manager Jose Mourinho.
