Could Germany international Jerome Boateng be heading to Old Trafford?
German Newspaper BILD has reported that Manchester United has reached out to Bayern Munich with the hope of signing the veteran.
Jose Mourinho’s United had previously pulled out of a deal to sign Barcelona defender Yerry Mina and had been expected to sign either Leicester City’s Harry Maguire or Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld.
With time ticking and the transfer window to close on Thursday, August 9 in England, Manchester United are under a lot of pressure to deliver on the wish of their Portuguese manager.
Bayern Munich are reportedly demanding £44m for the 29-year-old who had a below-par outing at the 2018 World Cup held in Russia. Boateng has also been plagued with several injuries in recent seasons and his form has been uncharacteristically erratic.
A deal for Jerome Boateng may represent the one missing link of experience, character and winning mentality that Jose Mourinho has craved for recently in his club side.
The former Hamburger SV player has proven himself to be a serial winner after winning the UEFA Champions League and several domestic titles with Bayern Munich as well as the 2014 FIFA World Cup with the German national team.
Boateng has previously played in England with United city rivals Manchester United, a spell that was brief but not stellar. He made 24 appearances and won the 2010/11 FA Cup trophy while with the citizens.
