Manchester United were reportedly the only club left in the chase for Milinkovic-Savic’s signature after Jurgen Klopp pulled out of the race for his services.
Having signed Fabinho from Monaco last month, the German tactician pulled out of the race to capture the midfielder before the end of the ongoing transfer market.
After hearing Liverpool’s decision to cool their interest in the Serbian midfielder, Manchester United manager José Mourinho was confident of bringing him to Old Trafford but that feeling might need to be changed by the Portuguese gaffer as reports claimed that Real Madrid are set to beat him to the player’s signature.
The former La Liga Champions are definitely going to make some changes to their squad ahead of next season as Lopetegui will be willing to lay claim for the League trophy by getting new players this summer.
According to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport, the Lazio midfielder is valued at €155m (£137m) by the Serie A giants and Madrid have already met the price tag ahead of their Premier League rivals.
Milinkovic-Savic told reporters after returning from Russia, where he failed to lead his country past the group stage of the World Cup, that he needs to rest for some period before discussing his future.
Only time will tell whether he will move to either Madrid or United this summer.
“First I’ll rest for a bit, then we’ll see.” he said to reporters.
