Manchester United and Spain midfielder Ander Herrera might just be on his way to his homeland as he’s being linked with a move to Athletic Bilbao this summer.
The Spaniard was sparingly involved in matches by José Mourinho in the first period of last season but after the festive break, the Portuguese manager began to give the 28-year-old more time on the pitch till the end of the season.
Despite enjoying what seems to be a new life under Mourinho, reports emanating from Spain suggest that the player could be ending his stay at Old Trafford, with Athletic Bilbao tipped as his next destination in the summer.
Herrera spent some seasons with Athletic Bilbao before he switched to the Old Trafford outfits in 2014 for a fee which was believed to be £29m.
According to Spanish Sports journal Dario AS, the Spaniard, who would be out of contract next summer, is being tracked by the La Liga side, hoping to launch a surprise bid for his signature ahead of next season.
It was earlier reported that former Serie A Champions AC Milan are developing an interest in the player as they hope to return back to their glory days in the next season.
It remains unknown if Mourinho would love to let one of his trusted midfielders depart the club in the summer. The San Siro outfit have failed to live up to their standard in recent seasons but they hope to turn that around as soon as possible.
With Marouane Fellaini’s speculated move away from Old Trafford in the summer, it is unlikely that Mourinho would want to partway with the player irrespective of the offer he receives from suitors.
