Chelsea are reportedly in a shock move for Tottenham wantaway defender Toby Alderweireld in the summer and they are going to battle Manchester United who have been tipped as the next destination for the Belgian international.
Manchester United manager José Mourinho has been monitoring the player since last two seasons hoping to lure him to Old Trafford but nothing materialize.
He might reignite his interest in him this summer as he is set to improve his defense before the coming season.
The 29-year-old is currently out of favour with Mauricio Pochetino, who preferred the combination of Sanchez and Davies at the heart of his team’s defence. Despite making an early return from his hamstring injury which kept him out of action for a month, the full-back has failed in his bid to reclaim his starting berth under the Argentine manager.
Chelsea have been dismal in their performances at the back all through this season, with only Christensen and Marcos Alonso performing up to their usual standard. As part of their desire to provide a competitive and solid squad for the incoming manager, the Blues are set to trigger a £25million buy-out clause in Alderweireld’s contract with Tottenham so as to acquire his services ahead of their Manchester rival.
Tottenham have already made up their mind to let go of the Belgian as they are eyeing a move for Ajax’s youngster Matthijs de Ligt, who has made over 50 appearances for the Eredivisie gaints.
The 18-year-old is tipped as the perfect replacement for the Belgian but his £42m price tag could be a stumbling block on Tottenham’s desire to sign him in the summer.
