The Belgian defender will see-out his current contract with the Lilywhites by the end of this season and he has been strongly linked with a move out of the Wembley stadium in the summer.

Alderweireld joined Mauricio Pochettino’s side in 2015 from Athletico Madrid and has created a great reputation for himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

Tottenham have a chance to extend his contract by one season but that could be done with a release clause of £25m attached to his contract.

Merson, former Arsenal player who is now a sport pundit, revealed his amazement to see that a player of his quality could be rated so low by the North London club.

As a result of his £25m release clause in his contract, Merson believes Europe’s top clubs are going to make enquiries about the player’s availability for a move in the summer.

Liverpool and United made an offer for the player in the previous transfer market but none of them was able to convince Tottenham to let him go. It is yet to be seen if both teams will reignite their interest in the Belgian full-back.
