Manchester United started yesterday’s match with the mission of getting at least a score-draw to boost their chances of making it to Champions League quarterfinal round but that wasn’t the case as they were outclassed by their La Liga opponents Sevilla who were lively from start to finish.
Manchester United boss named a surprise starting lineup as he preferred Scott Mctominay to Paul Pogba in the middle of the pitch while Ander Herrera was also given a rare start by the Portuguese manager.
Sevilla, who have won three out of their last four Europa League finals, started strongly and the almost break that deadlock in the 15th minutes through Ever Benerga shot but the impressive David De Gea was up to the task as he punched it out for a corner.
Sevilla piled up more pressure on the Spain international netminder but didn’t find the back of the net.
As for United, it took José Mourinho’s men 25 minutes to have their first shot which was a poor one from Alexis Sanchez who showed great power and strength throughout the encounter.
United’s record signing, Paul Pogba came into the game in the 17th minute in place of Ander Herrera who picked up a slight knock. The Frenchman man brought some strength to the unimpressive United side but that wasn’t enough for United to get a very vital away goal.
At the latter stages of the match, Sevilla became more desperate for a goal but they couldn’t get it. Pablo Sara tried his luck with a header which sailed over the crossbar in the 74 minutes, Clement Lenglet couldn’t beat De Gea with another header in the 64th minute.
Joaquin Correa also had numerous chances but he failed to take them. Mourinho introduced both Martial and Rashford 15 and 17 minutes away from time respectively but they could do nothing to stop the game from ending in a draw.
Manchester United fans believe MCTOMINAY will be the new Fletcher
McTominay is basically a cloned version of Darren Fletcher. Man Utd doing Les Enfants Terribles of their former players. #TouchlineFracas

Think McTominay is going to be like Fletcher. Not turning any heads at the moment, but athletic, and binding his time

Mctominay is the new Darren Fletcher…. back when Sir Alex started picking him Most united fans slatted him week in week out. Have a day off and back the team and the youth players

McTominay could be the new Darren Fletcher for club & country. McTominay might not be a flashy player but he does get the job done. #SEVMUN
