According to British media reports, Premier League giants Manchester United are likely to face stiff competition from reigning La Liga Champions Real Madrid for the service of Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld this summer transfer window.
Real Madrid keen on defender
The Daily Mirror suggests that the Los Blancos are set to “lead” the pursuit for the Belgium international defender as they attempt to strengthen their defense at the end of the campaign.
The same article says that Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City are among several suitors interested in landing the defender this summer window from Tottenham Hotspurs.
The report says that the Champions League winners have been “alerted” by the player’s current contract situation with Spurs and that the Spanish outfit could make a swoop when the season ends.
Premier League sides monitoring contract situations
However, despite Real’s apparent interest in the 28-year-old, the Red Devil’s and the Blues are believed to be monitoring situations as the rumour about his Spurs future continues.
The defender’s current contract at Tottenham is set to run out in 2019, but the north London outfit have the option of renewing by another season to 2020.
However, it is suggested in the same report that the player’s deal also has a £25million buyout clause which comes into full effect next summer transfer window, meaning that his club may choose to offload this summer window if they cannot convince the defender to sign a fresh contract.
