Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti is set to remain at the Camp Nou stadium for more seasons despite Manchester United’s offer for his signature.
Manchester United have reportedly agreed to meet up with the player’s release clause in his contract with Barcelona but the Premier League giants might fail in their bid for the player as Umtiti is currently in talks with the Catalans over a new contract.
Umtiti still has a contract which will tie him to the Spanish giants until 2022 but Barca’s hierarchy are looking to the prospect of extending his contract so as to avoid losing him to other clubs who are desperate to pay for his release clause including Manchester United and Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola monitored the centre-back in the winter but he wasn’t able to acquire the defender which later made him turn his attention to Aymeric Laporte whom he successfully brought to the Etihad Stadium before the close of the transfer market.
Umtiti has been ever-present in Valverde team so far this season and he might be with the club until 2024 should he agree to extend his contract with the former La Liga Champions which will earn him €5miliion annually.
José Mourinho is currently in search of a defender who could also operate as a defensive midfielder having seen his team’s dismal defensive display in recent matches against Tottenham and Newcastle.
