Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso scored his sixth goal of the current Premier League campaign on Wednesday night against Arsenal in a 2-2 draw at The Emirates, equaling the number he attained last season and with that extends his tally for The Blues since signing in the summer of 2016 to 12 goals in the league.
That total of 12 is the highest a defender has reached in the Premier League since the start of the 2016/2017 season.
Alonso who plays at left wingback for the Premier League champions has been a consistent performer for manager Antonio Conte as he has come up with goals of great importance for the club – none more so than the double he produced at Wembley Stadium earlier in the season to give Chelsea all 3 points against London rivals Tottenham Hotspurs.
The 27-year-old Spaniard is the only recognized Left wingback at Stamford Bridge at the moment which has seen the club linked with a number of left-backs as the January transfer window kicks into gear.
However, given his form for the West London club, any potential signing will have his work cut out for him trying to win over a starting position.
Antonio Conte is pleased with the contributions made by Alonso this season – who is also the highest scoring defender in Europe’s Top 5 leagues – and will be looking for more of the same in the coming months.
