Chelsea are known to be in the market for new acquisitions in the January transfer window, and according to reports, they are planning a sensational bid for Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar.
The French star played a major role in Monaco’s title-winning season and their great run in the Champions League before they were knocked out by Juventus in the semi-finals of the competition. He scored 14 goals and contributed 17 assists in a strong individual campaign.
He gained a lot of admirers as did many of his fellow Monaco players, and was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Liverpool but remained in the Principality side, who have struggled so far this season and were knocked out in the group stage of the champions league.
Chelsea have now shown their interest in the player and though Monaco must have accepted the fact that they are bound to lose their star player preferably in the summer they might be unable to resist a mega bid should it be made mid-season.
Chelsea will have to make him their club record signing as he is valued at ₤80m by Monaco but are believed to have an advantage over their Premier League rivals as they can offer players whether on loan or permanently, as part of the deal.
Furthermore, former Chelsea technical director, Michael Emenalo is now holding the equivalent position at Monaco and can make things go smoothly in terms of negotiations. The Blues also last summer signed Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.
Lemar can play multiple positions across the attack and would be a great addition to the Chelsea squad.
