Man United had hoped to renew interest this summer but have been dealt a major blow by news of the player already reaching an agreement with the Spanish league leaders.
It is understood that Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward has made contact with representatives of the player, with the club yet to give up their hope of signing Griezmann.
Meanwhile, Griezmann on his part has agreed to a deal in principle with the Catalan club. Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been working behind the scenes to strike a deal, which has paid off if this report is to be believed.
Griezmann had left the door open to United ever since committing to Atletico for the season, even hinting as much in his recently released biography.
Manchester United who are in need of attacking reinforcements might have to look away from the Atletico Madrid forward for their marquee summer buy.
