Chelsea are set to launch a January bid of €20 million for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.
Reports say Chelsea have been monitoring the 20-year old Jamaican International for about 18 months and have sent scouts to watch him on several occasions.
The winger is rated as one of the fastest players in the Bundesliga and is tied to Bayer Leverkusen until 2022.
Spanish giants Barcelona have also been credited with an interest in the player but are said to be behind Chelsea who have started negotiations with the German club side.
Chelsea are willing to loan Bailey back to Bayer Leverkusen for the rest of the season, if a deal can be agreed upon next month.
This is in continuation of Chelsea’s new policy of targeting young players with the aim of developing their potential and building a team for the future.
Leon Bailey is a diminutive, explosive left-footed winger who can also play in behind the frontman. He joined Bayer Leverkusen from Belgian club K.R.C Genk for a fee of about €20 million in the 2016/2017 winter transfer window. At the end of the 2015/2016 season, he won the Belgian Young Footballer of the Year award.
Reports also state that Bailey was not a player requested for by Chelsea boss Antonio Conte but is a project of the club’s recruitment department.
