Chelsea last night played out a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in their final group game in this season Champions league. That result coupled with AS Roma’s 1-0 victory over Qarabag ensured that the Italians finished top of Group C with Chelsea finishing second.
Both teams were tied on points but the Italian side had a better head-to-head record against Chelsea. Finishing second means Chelsea might end up facing PSG or Barcelona in the knockout stage.
Even though the night didn’t go according to plan for the Blues having had the better opportunities to win against Atletico, star man Eden Hazard was feeling optimistic and had this to say concerning the potential knockout draw.
“It is not a problem who we get, we are Chelsea. We know PSG and Barcelona are very good but we are a top team too. We can do anything. via metro”
Atletico took the lead in the second half through Saul Niguez who benefitted from a delightful flick on from former Chelsea man, Fernando Torres after a corner. Chelsea got the equalizer courtesy of an own goal from Atletico defender Stefan Savic. The Blues had the better chances in the game but came up against an in-form goalkeeper in Jan Oblak.
It is often said that to win the Champions League, you have to beat the best teams in Europe and it appears to be going towards that direction for Chelsea.
