Manchester United have been given the go-ahead to sign Atletico Madrid player after battling with a host of European giants.
Uruguay international Jose Gimenez who has seen his place lost to Stefan Savic and Diego Godin, is on the brink of joining Manchester United when the winter transfer window commences.
His signature will largely depend on United’s readiness to make the move official as Mourinho still hopes to bring his number one defender target – David Luiz – to the Old Trafford.
Should the Red Devils be too sluggish in their approach, Serie A Champions Juventus are right behind them watching every move and looking as the clock ticks. The Old Lady are also in the race to sign the Uruguayan as Gimenez is not short of options.
Juventus are still on the lookout for the defender who will replace Leonardo Bonucci who was sold to Italian team AC Milan in the summer.
Bonucci has also been the subject of transfer rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid as the Champions League holders seek to strengthen their team as the season gets tougher.
Jose Mourinho has had to pair different players at the back, partly due to the injury concerns of Phil Jones and Eric Baily. New recruit Victor Lindleof has shown signs of quality, but is still vulnerable at the back.
